Feral Factory’s four-month Residency at the Crash continues with an exhibition on the theme of radical heterogeneity. Artist Thomas “Detour” Evans anchors an international collection of works which explore the richness, complexity, conflicts, and possibilities embodied by city life.

Opening Saturday, April 1, with performances from The Black Actors Guild, The Nimble Hive, and poet Soma Feldmer. Feral Factory’s openings are part art exhibition, part performance, entertainment, and party—an evening of aesthetic inspiration and community.

Radical Heterogeneity

An Exhibition of Visual Arts

Mural by Thomas “Detour” Evans

Radical heterogeneity, as a position, seeks a multiplicity of viewpoints, lifestyles, and ways of being, and it negotiates room for them. Jane Jacobs wrote, in the Death and Life of Great American Cities, “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”

Detour’s art, which anchors this multi-artist show, connects music and fine arts through traditional methods and technology. The sights, sounds, and issues surrounding urban culture shape the execution of his work. Much of his work consists of channeling concepts and issues about the urban-arts culture, through portraits of urban subjects. The portraits tackle issues ranging from the serious, to the bastardization of a culture, to the lighthearted, to breakdancing. Some portraits open a window into the inner workings of a certain community, while other paintings simply try to enhance the audience’s experience.

This exhibition draws its questions from the philosophies of Jean-François Lyotard and Mikhail Bakhtin, building from the exhibition of works on Exploring the Collage City. This exhibition on radical heterogeneity sets the tone for our third exhibition at The Crash, which explores the concepts of resistance and resilience through the lens of art.

We hope you’ll be able to join us throughout our Residency at the Crash, and for all of our events. Feral Factory looks forward to seeing you!
